Robert F. Sargent, a Chief Photographer's Mate in the US Coast Guard, took this photograph from the interior of a Coast Guard-crewed landing craft, the USS Samuel Chase, on June 6, 1944. The image hauntingly portrays the view that would have faced American G.I.'s rushing out of those landing craft to storm the Nazi-held beaches on D-Day. For an image to remind you daily of the steely courage of those warriors who came before us, look no further than this.
